week 16 update… this one doesn’t deserve an exclamation point.

so, i didn’t buy breakfast more than once this week. technically, then, i succeeded. but, that’s the best i can say for myself.

that said, i didn’t eat the dip and veggies and cereal for breakfast after monday. i just couldn’t bring myself to do it! it felt so un-breakfasty. i ate the veggies and dip for my late-morning snack, and they were delicious! but, not like breakfast.

my week involved several late-start mornings, so i was able to make breakfast at home. on wednesday, i meant to eat it as breakfast, and then i totally forgot to bring the dip or cereal from my office when i stopped by there early, so i had to buy breakfast out that day. i like to save breakfast buying for thursday or friday, but, what can you do?

but one thing that a friend suggested is that if i think of this week as an experiment, it isn’t a failure, because i got experimental data! and that data says: pushing too far, too fast, with un-breakfasty foods. so, without further ado:

  • breakfasts bought: 1. success!
  • pre-made breakfasts eaten: 1
  • cost on supplies for breakfasts made: $2.98 technically–but i have 7 coconut milks and almost an entire box of puffins remaining.
  • time to prepare breakfasts for the week: 10 minutesish.
  • tastiness factor (scale where 1 is not tasty at ALL and 5 is exceptionally tasty): 4, as a snack food!

week 16: veggies and dip and puffins.

so this weekend i went away for anniversarication, and so i knew there would not be much time for breakfast making during the brief period when i was home and the kitchen was available on sunday, particularly since i had to prepare a crockpot meal for tomorrow night’s dinner! luckily, i had sort of prepared for this moment.

about a month ago, i went to deals and steals. this was endlessly exciting, because it is essentially the best store on earth! it’s overstock/damaged hippie foods. so along with the other amazing things i got, like seaweed and really cheap wheat gluten and chocolate and ponzu and lemon-infused olive oil, i got a box of puffins for 99 cents, and a package of mini so delicious coconut milks for $1.99, which amazon claims would normally cost like $11. (to clarify: this isn’t coconut milk like you would use in, for example, peanut sauce. it is sort of like that, really thinned out, with a bit of sweetener and a bunch of vitamins added–i think? but it’s definitely different.) upon buying, i decided to save them for a breakfast on a busy week. but they still don’t quite meet my nutritional requirements: coconut drink is good, but remarkably free of protein, and barbara’s fit the whole grain requirement but sorely lack fruit or vegetables. but i knew what i needed to do: i needed to make a veggie dip. but this isn’t as simple as it sounds.

week 15 update!

i wished this week that i had made enough sandwiches to not have to buy my breakfast at all. but i had not forseen that. but these totally stayed delicious, and i am glad i at least got to eat them for three days.

  • breakfasts bought: 1. success!
  • breakfasts made: 3. success!
  • cost on supplies for breakfasts made: $1.25
  • time to prepare breakfasts for the week: about 40 minutes.
  • tastiness factor (scale where 1 is not tasty at ALL and 5 is exceptionally tasty): 4.8, at least.

from uninspired to a resounding success–week 15 totally turned itself around!

week 15: fancy egg sandwiches

so this week i was just feeling so unsure what to do for breakfasts. people have given me so many great ideas, but i just wasn’t feeling inspired, and was actually sort of dreading having to make breakfast. even though it’s a short week! which should make everything so easy!

then, i was with a friend at city feed monday morning, and i saw their day-old bread section–which, for a store that size, is prodigious. and as i looked through it for a snack, i found a bag of three day old bagels for the price of one. three! that’s how many breakfasts i need for the week! it’s a sign! so, i bought them and brought them home.

i remembered that my sister had gotten me an egg mold for one of my christmas presents (the list goes on!), and so i figured this was as good a time as any to use it.  my partner was cleaning out the ice cave (our non-self-defrosting freezer) today, and pulled out a container full of pesto i had made this summer. i  had some reusable elements from last night’s delicious dinner of creamy polenta, spinach-mushroom-caramelized onion melange, tomato sauce, and tempeh croutons. annnnnd, i’m off!

week 14 update!

this apple cake stayed DELICIOUS and oddly textured all week. on friday, i had a brilliant idea: flip it so that it applesauce-side up, broil it in the toaster oven, and end up with browned crispiness on top, and a warmed-through cake. outcome: totally didn’t happen that way. it just got hot and made me late for work. so, that was less successful than expected, but i still ate a delicious cake! so, could have been way worse.
the summary:
  • breakfasts bought: 1. success!
  • breakfasts made: 4
  • cost on supplies for breakfasts made: $0! pretty much! see my caveat from monday!
  • time to prepare breakfasts for the week: 1 hr 20 min, but almost an hour of that was inactive cook time.
  • tastiness factor (scale where 1 is not tasty at ALL and 5 is exceptionally tasty): 4.5. that shit was awesome. and i got over the stevia aftertaste by tuesday.

and: 1/3 of the school year down! it’s so great how 1/4 of the year and 1/3 of the school year occur in such quick succession. five more weeks of work until february break– i can totally make breakfasts till then, no problem.

i am possibly inappropriately impressed with myself.

week 14: apple cake.

i see the questions already: apple cake? how does that fit the protein and whole grains and fruit or veggies rule?

i figure that the ways that it meets the last rule is a little self evident. and the answer to the first two rules is: i totally tore up the smitten kitchen recipe i based this off of. and just threw in my own ingredients. who is surprised? most likely: no one.

and, while it turned out really different, i will also say that i think it turned out awesome.

okay. so i will admit that these got a little weird. the inexplicable fake bacon taste got more and more confusing to me as the week went on. but i did okay!

  • time to prepare breakfasts for the week: 40 minutes?
  • tastiness factor (scale where 1 is not tasty at ALL and 5 is exceptionally tasty): 3.8? not my best work. but i also got to taste the sweet virtue of using up leftovers!
